This is a CaPPP members only event
Event Description:
It is hard for white people to understand the privilege they have. Often, they do not feel very privileged themselves. Even well-meaning white people struggle to understand the depth of feeling that people from BAME communities feel about this privilege which can be obvious but is also hidden and subtle so hard to see. This workshop is designed to help white counsellors and psychotherapists gain a greater depth of understanding of the what it means to be a white psychotherapist within a diverse society and how their privilege affects their relationship with their client.
Facilitator Profile: Judy Ryde PhD
Judy has been a psychotherapist for more than 40 years and was one of the Founders of the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC). For much of her professional life she has been concerned about the lack of diversity in psychotherapy and this led to her doctoral research into whiteness within a racialized society. Her books, ‘Being White in the Helping Professions’ was published in 2009 and ‘White Privilege Unmasked: How to be part of the solution’, in 2019. She is founder and director of the charity Trauma Foundation South West, which provides counselling and psychotherapy for refugees and asylum seekers, as well as training and supervision for those working with traumatized refugees and asylum seekers in other agencies.
