SUMMARY:CaPPP Annual Gathering & AGM 2026
DESCRIPTION:Includes CaPPP in-person CPD workshop on Intersectional Approaches to Working with Racial Difference with Dwight Turner\n\n\nWorkshop: Intersectional Approaches to Working with Racial Difference \nIn May 2020\, when George Floyd was murdered\, there was a huge outpouring across the world standing up for minority groups post the murder of one black man. The importance of this movement\, and of groups such as Black Lives Matter\, should not be underestimated\, as this marked a shift across the globe in how we actually view and understand race\, racism\, and the experiences of the racialised other. \nThis workshop\, which is built around the ideas presented in the book A Phenomenology of Racism\, looks at the racial construct as something which impacts upon all of us. This session will therefore involve a presentation around race and its construction within a social system of whiteness\, together with looking at how each one of us in turn has internalised aspects of racialised otherness. It will also include a creative exploration of systemic whiteness. \nLearning outcomes: \n· At the end of the session practitioners will have a better understanding of the construct of Race and will be able to discuss and explore the racial construct with their clients; \n· To facilitate this level of learning\, practitioners will have the chance to consider their own relationship to race and to systemic whiteness\, and look at how these identities have moulded their ability\, or not\, to see the other. \n· Practitioners will be given the opportunity to practice discussing race\, and will gain some of the creative tools necessary in working with the trauma of experiences of racism; \n· This workshop is designed to therefore give practitioners the tools required to become safe spaces for their clients when working with race. \nFacilitator Profile: \nDr Dwight Turner is Course Leader on the Humanistic Psychotherapy Course at the University of Brighton\, and a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice. Dr Turner is the author of Decolonising Counselling and Psychotherapy: Depoliticised pathways towards intersectional practice (2025)\, The Psychology of Supremacy (2023)\, and Intersections of Privilege and Otherness in Counselling and Psychotherapy (2021). All are published by Routledge. \nPrice: Free to CaPPP members * There is a £10.00 booking fee to cover the catering cost of any non attendance.
