SUMMARY:Understanding and Working with Compulsive Sexual Behaviour
DESCRIPTION:A CaPPP CPD workshop for Therapists with Magda Piesiewicz\n\n\nCaPPP is proud to introduce a special one-off workshop on Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorders. \nWe’ve heard your concerns and questions about how to understand and approach these behaviours\, and we’re here to support you. \nThis workshop is designed to provide clarity\, guidance\, and practical insights\, empowering you with the knowledge you need to navigate this topic confidently. \nJoin us to gain a deeper understanding and find helpful strategies in your private practice. \nThe workshop: \nThis workshop offers an in-depth and clinically informed exploration of Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD)\, drawing on current research\, therapeutic frameworks\, and case-based learning. The workshop aims to equip mental health practitioners with a more nuanced understanding of CSBD\, the factors that influence its development\, and how to engage ethically and effectively with clients presenting with sexually compulsive behaviours. \nParticipants will explore diagnostic frameworks\, including the ICD-11 classification of CSBD\, and will critically examine the debate between CSBD and the concept of sex addiction. The workshop will also introduce the principles of sexual health and help distinguish between problematic and functional aspects of sexual behaviours. We will discuss paraphilic interests versus perceived dysfunction. \nThrough a blend of theoretical content\, clinical case studies\, group discussion\, and reflective practice\, participants will gain tools for assessment\, formulation\, and intervention. The day supports trauma-informed\, sexology-informed\, and culturally sensitive practice\, and is suitable for clinicians working with sexual issues in private practice\, health settings\, and specialist services. \nLearning outcomes: \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n• Define and describe the key features and diagnostic criteria of Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD). \n• Differentiate CSBD from normative high sexual desire\, paraphilic interests\, and relational issues. \n• Identify contributing and maintaining factors\, including psychological\, relational\, neurobiological\, and sociocultural influences. \n• Apply a range of sexology-informed and integrative therapeutic interventions in working with CSBD. \n• Understand sexual health principles and how they apply to assessment and formulation. \n• Reflect on personal attitudes\, values\, and countertransference in the therapeutic relationship. \nEvent Programme: \n10:00 – 10:15 – Introductions and Reflective Icebreaker \nParticipants are welcomed and introduced to the aims\, structure\, and tone of the day. \n10:15 – 11:15 – Understanding CSBD: ICD-11\, Diagnostic Boundaries\, and Clinical Presentation \nThis session begins with an overview of CSBD as defined in ICD-11\, including clinical features and diagnostic considerations. We will explore the ongoing debate between CSBD and the concept of “sex addiction\,” considering implications for clinical work\, language\, and stigma. We will learn the concept of sexual health. \n11:15 – 11:30 – Morning Break \n11:30 – 13:00– Aetiology\, Formulation\, and Working with Complex Presentations \nThis session includes a presentation on clinical formulation using a biopsychosocial and psychosexual lens\, offering frameworks for understanding the complexity of CSBD. This will be followed by Case Study 1 and a group discussion\, where participants will apply these models and reflect on both the problematic and functional aspects of the behaviour within its wider context. \n13:00 – 14:00 – Lunch \n14:00 – 15:30 – Psychosexual and Integrative Interventions: Psychoeducation\, Emotional Regulation and Arousal Template Analysis \nThis session introduces essential psychosexual interventions\, including psychoeducation to help clients distinguish between fantasy and behaviour\, and emotional regulation strategies to address the underlying drivers of compulsivity. Therapists will also explore how to support clients in understanding their arousal templates in a non-pathologising\, and safe manner. \n16:00 – 16:15 – Afternoon Break \n16:15 – 16:45 – Case Study 2 \nA practical clinical vignette to apply theory to practice. Participants will engage in discussion around clinical decision-making\, therapist responses\, and ethical considerations. \n16:45 – 17:00– Final Reflections\, Questions\, and Close \nGroup reflection\, Q&A\, and summary of key insights from the day. \nFacilitator Profile: \nMagda is a UK-based Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist with extensive clinical experience supporting individuals and couples with a wide range of sexual and relational difficulties. She holds an MSc in Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Sexology and is currently completing a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy at Middlesex University. \nHer doctoral research explores psychotherapists’ experiences of working with clients struggling with Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD)\, with a focus on how clinicians navigate the clinical\, ethical\, and emotional complexities involved in this work. This research aligns closely with her ongoing interest in developing practitioner understanding and confidence when working with psychosexual issues in clinical settings. \nAlongside her therapeutic practice\, Magda has delivered a number of CPD workshops and professional trainings on compulsive sexual behaviour and broader psychosexual themes. She brings a particular passion for psychoeducation and is committed to creating reflective\, clinically grounded learning spaces. Her integrative approach is informed by psychosexual therapy\, person-centred values\, and trauma-informed principles. \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nBooking: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/ \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 12.00 on Wednesday 12th November 2025 \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments are available throughout the day \nLunch: Lunch and refreshments are included in your booking \nVenue: Engineer’s House\, The Promenade\, Clifton Down\, Clifton\, Bristol\, BS8 3NB

SUMMARY:CaPPP Annual Gathering & AGM 2025
DESCRIPTION:Includes CaPPP CPD workshop on Stabilisation in Trauma Treatment with Ben Gatty\n\n\nWorkshop: Stabilisation in Trauma Treatment \nThis workshop will combine theory and experiential elements to highlight some of the nuances of working to resource someone who has been significantly traumatised. Given the prevalence of psychological trauma for the therapy seeking community\, the topic can have a broad relevance and may also apply to clients that are not always seen as traumatised\, such as those who have been emotionally neglected\, some who are prone to anxiety or who are experiencing depression\, etc. \nStabilisation tends now to be understood to be a foundation for trauma therapy\, foregrounded by leading trauma therapists such as Rothschild\, Van der Kolk and Fisher\, in models such as DBT & Sensorimotor & in texts such as the recent ‘Complex Trauma: The Tavistock model’. But helping to resource a traumatised client can be at odds with many more traditional ways of working therapeutically\, as it encourages that a more active and directive therapist stance is central to the early – and perhaps ongoing – work with a client. Thus\, many therapists can find it hard to integrate this approach. For other therapists the approach is less of a theoretical challenge\, but it can be hard to know how to stabilise in different contexts. Earlier versions of this training have received strong feedback re: helping participants to work more comfortably and extensively to resource their clients and to incorporate this perspective in to their existing ways of working. \nLearning outcomes: \n– An understanding of Janet’s 3 stage model of trauma treatment \n– Helping clients to appreciate their existing ‘resources’ \n– A nuanced view on using the ‘Window of Affect Tolerance’ model \n– Body based experiential practices that can stabilise clients and help therapists to be more available under high stress \n– A framework that helps us to position ourselves in different versions of the therapeutic relationship \n– An exploration of a key approach to using mental imagery with traumatised clients \n– Understanding how depression can often be reduced by a simple\, well researched practice\, (given how many traumatised clients may also become depressed). \n– A review of ways that we can understand psychological trauma and how to respond to different types of presentation \nFacilitator Profile: \nBen Gatty is an integrative psychotherapist who has specialised in work with psychological trauma. He was Trauma Lead in Transport for London’s Counselling and Trauma Service and is currently a lecturer at Regent’s University. His clinical approach combines embodied\, experiential\, psychoanalytic and other ways of working. He lives in Brighton with his partner and 5 year old daughter. \nBooking: CaPPP Annual Gathering & AGM 2025 \nPrice: Free to CaPPP members * We ask that you only book a place if you can commit to attending the event and\, to reduce food waste\, we reserve the right to charge you £15 to cover the catering cost for your place if you do not attend or cancel after 10th October \nBooking: This is a members only event . All places must be booked in advance by Sunday 12th October. Not a member? SUMMARY:An image-based approach to psychotherapy with Allan Frater
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD event Saturday 13th September 2025 – 10.00am to 5.00pm \nWatch a video by Allan: https://youtube.com/shorts/7nhxBVLm6iI?feature=share \nJoin author Allan Frater and learn an image-based approach to psychotherapy \nAllan is a psychotherapist with a long-term research interest in story and imagination – which came to fruition in his 2021 book\, ‘Waking Dreams: Imagination in Psychotherapy & Everyday Life’ \nThis workshop offers a pre-view of material from Allan’s forthcoming book developing the role of imagination in psychosynthesis psychotherapy – structured around an adaptation of the ‘Stages of Psychosynthesis’: \nStage1: story identification \nStage2: story disidentification \nStage3: story emergence \nStage4: living between stories \nThese stages provide a basis for understanding presenting issue symptoms as an impoverishment of imagination – and for the healing and recovery from those symptoms\, not as is often assumed\, by the replacement of fantasy with reality\, but rather with the cultivation of imaginative life itself. \nAs we shall learn on the workshop\, there is no getting away from stories as imaginative experiences\, but what we can do is help the client to re-imagine the story being told about self and world\, creating a new expanded story better able to incorporate the presenting issue. \nEvent Learning Outcomes \n\nDistinguishing the benefits of working with imaginative experiences from the limitations of an interpretative-analytical emphasis upon figuring out what images mean.\nHow to appreciate images as the raw-material of therapeutic work within memories\, present-moment-perceptions (the transference) and future fantasies.\nApplying the playful unpredictability and creative adaptability of imagining so as to avoid the deadening and humourless effects of a formulaic scripted approach.\nUnderstanding how the synthesising capacities of imagination align with psychosynthesis theory and technique.\nWorking therapeutically with imagination as a meta-function which includes sensations\, feelings\, thoughts\, intuitions\, perceptions and actions.\nUnderstanding imagination to be in operation all-the-time\, not just as ‘pictures inside the mind’\, but also in normal everyday life in the physical world.\n\nFacilitator \nAllan Frater is the author of ‘Waking Dreams: Imagination in Psychotherapy & Everyday Life’ (TranspersonalPress\, 2021). He is a psychotherapist in private practice and since 2011 has taught at the Psychosynthesis Trust\, on the Foundation and Counselling Diploma courses as well as CPD events related to his research interests in imagination\, ecopsychology and transpersonal psychotherapy. \nQualifications: Diploma in Supervision with Soul (2013)\, MA Psychosynthesis Psychotherapy (2011)\, PGDip Psychosynthesis Counselling (2007) MBACP (Accred) UKCP (reg) \nFind out more: wildimagination.uk | @wakingdreams20 \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 12.00 on Wednesday 10th Sep 2025 \nBooking: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Lunch is included in the price \nVenue: Engineer’s House\, The Promenade\, Avon\, Clifton Down\, Bristol BS8 3NB \n

SUMMARY:Working in depth within a short-term Relational and Psychodynamic model
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD workshop with Katina Noble\n\n\nI will present a model of working short term\, which explores and combines different ways to work in depth with our clients. \nWe will look at the influence of David Malan\, Jennifer Elton-Wilson and Gertrude Mander among others. I will present their different approaches\, and we will also work experientially\, using some of their ideas and techniques. \nEvent Learning Outcomes: \nAs we find so much of our work is short term\, be that with an agency\, as an EAP counsellor\, in schools and colleges\, it is important to find a way of working relationally\, psychodynamically and in depth within the constraints of a limited number of sessions. By the end of the workshop\, I hope participants will feel more confident and inspired to work in this way. \nFacilitator: \nKatina Noble is a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor who trained at BCPC. She co-ran the Student Counselling Service at Weston College for 21 years\, where the majority of the work was short term. She is also an EAP Counsellor and has a private practice in Bristol. \nBooking: Working in depth within a short-term Relational and Psychodynamic model Tickets\, Sat 21 Jun 2025 at 10:00 | Eventbrite \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 12.00 on Wednesday 18th June 2025 \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Lunch is included in the price \nVenue: St Michael’s Centre \, North Road\, Stoke Gifford\, Bristol BS34 8PD

SUMMARY:Room for Capacity with Jane Renton & Pam Gilvear
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD – Beyond self-care: a workshop for all counsellors who wish to consider work / life balance\n\n\nWe are excited to be offering this unique CPD – the focus is on our capacity as therapists and the direct effect of this on our clients. We are offering an experiential\, insightful day exploring the concept of “capacity”. Through group reflection\, visualisations and meditations we will offer space for you to discover: \n \n\nwhat your ‘capacity comfort zone ‘ feels and looks like\nwhat impacts your capacity to hold space for your clients\nwhat erodes and expands your capacity\nwhat are the signs we are reaching our capacity or beyond it?\ntools and concepts that can be used with clients\n\n \nThe concept of this workshop was borne from many years together in a peer supervision group grappling with our own capacity in the face of many and various events in our private lives. We know that our capacity has a direct impact on the work we do with clients: the depth we can go to is directly related to where we are in relation to ourselves and our own capacity. We committed to exploring how to work ethically and effectively with the ebb and flow of our life and the effect of this on our clients. \nThe training is a mix of facilitated group discussion drawing on collective wisdom\, exploration in small groups\, guided meditations and visualisations. As well as being a cognitive examination of what capacity means for you\, it will also be a nourishing day for all and a chance to sink a little deeper into our relationship with ourselves. \nOf course\, capacity is something we can discuss in supervision but there is something special about sharing wisdom on this topic in a group. \nThis training is for any counsellor / psychotherapist whether in training or in an established practice. Wherever we are on our journey we can benefit from taking time to look at what we hold and if that is OK for us. \nPlease bring anything you need for your comfort – cushion / yoga mat\, and a journal. \n \nFacilitator Profile: \nPam and Jane trained together\, qualifying in 2014. Since then we have worked together as Anam Training and have offered training for counsellors in various settings. We love to offer space for counsellors to explore the edges of their practice\, consider new concepts and new ways of supporting themselves and through this\, their clients. \n \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nSpaces are limited to 25 and must be booked in advance by Wednesday 12th March \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Bring your own lunch or take advantage of one of the many cafes in the area. \nVenue: Quaker Meeting House\, 300 Gloucester Road\, Horfield\, Bristol BS87 8PD

SUMMARY:Working with the Intersections of Privilege & Otherness with Dwight Turner
DESCRIPTION:A Counselling & Psychotherapy Perspective on Intersections of Privilege & Otherness\n\n\nSince 2020\, when the world moved into Lockdown because of the Corona Virus\, it seems that there has been a massive shift in our awareness and our approaches to issues of equality\, diversity\, privilege\, and otherness. The deaths of George Floyd and Sarah Everard\, together with the trials of the LGBTQ community and those who are neurodiverse\, have meant that we have all collectively had to look at issues of privilege and otherness. \nMy work explores through a therapeutic lens how we might approach and work with the varying different communities who sit and reside in cities such as Bristol. This session will be part taught but also partly experiential and participants are encouraged to bring their own sense of difference and otherness for us all to explore and discuss in a safe and contained environment. \nEvent Learning Outcomes: \n\nAt the end of this session practitioners will have an understanding of how an intersectional approach to issues of difference and diversity brings their own experience into the consulting room\nHow working initially with one’s own experience of privilege and otherness then allows us to empathise with our clients\nThis session will enable practitioners to recognise where they are provoked by the unconscious material of those who are speaking about their experiences of difference and otherness\nThis will help practitioners to provide a safe enough space for their clients in order to receive the difficult stories of difference and diversity\n\nFacilitator \nDr Dwight Turner is Course Leader on the Humanistic Counselling and Psychotherapy Course at the University of Brighton\, a PhD Supervisor at their Doctoral College\, a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice. His publications include The Psychology of Supremacy (2023)\, and Intersections of Privilege and Otherness in Counselling and Psychotherapy (2021)\, which are both published by Routledge\, together with several chapters in anthologies on aspects of counselling and psychotherapy\, and over 50 academic papers on everything from intersectionality in psychotherapy\, to dreamwork\, to Afrocentric spirituality. \nA leading driver in Intersectional Psychotherapy\, Dr Turner is an experienced conference speaker\, including numerous keynote presentations. Dr Turner has also run workshops for a wide variety of Universities\, Charities\, and private organisations on issues of race\, difference and intersectionality in counselling and psychotherapy. Dr Turner can be contacted via his website www.dwightturnercounselling.co.uk and can be followed on social media on LinkedIn\, Threads\, or on Twitter at @dturner300. \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 13.00 on Wednesday 29th Jan 2025 \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.00 to 9.30 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Lunch is included in the price \nVenue: St Michael’s Centre \, North Road\, Stoke Gifford\, Bristol BS34 8PD

SUMMARY:Neurodiversity - what it means and how to create a neuro-affirming practice
DESCRIPTION:Creating a neuro-affirming practice\n\n\nNeurodiversity. More and more people are using the word. Some with a depth of knowledge and lived experience. But for many\, it’s still relatively new and comes with snippets of understanding pieced together from a wide range of sources that vary in reliability and helpfulness. \nThis day-long training will provide a coherent and therapy-focussed dive into neurodivergence. \nAfter setting the scene as to why there’s ‘an explosion’ of neurodivergence and why different professions use varied language and approaches to people diagnosed as autistic or ADHD\, we’ll take a deep dive into what a neuro-affirming approach to counselling looks like. \nFrom law and ethics to being sensory-informed\, this training will give you a more inclusive lens within which to explore how clients are experiencing the world – internally and externally. \nThere will also be the opportunity to ask lots of questions\, share books and resources and get handouts with a variety of further signposting information. \nDelivered by neurodivergent counsellors Kerry Berber and Clare Kingsbury. \nKerry is an integrative counsellor working in private practice with adults who are primarily neurodivergent. She is currently researching autism in the context of counselling at Bath Spa University\, and is neurodivergent herself. \nhttps://KerryBerber.com \nClare works with children and young people as well as adults as an integrative counsellor in Weston-super-Mare. She also delivers more ADHD-specific workshops for counsellors\, clients and parents. \nhttps://clarekingsburycounselling.co.uk/ \n \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 13.00 on Wednesday 12th June \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Lunch is included in the price \nVenue: St Michael’s Centre \, North Road\, Stoke Gifford\, Bristol BS34 8PD

SUMMARY:The World of Play – Essential Nature\, Healing Gift & Lifelong Companion
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD event Saturday 17th February 2024\n\n\n‘It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality\, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self’. \nD.W. Winnicott ‘Playing & Reality’\, 1971\, \nThe play theorist Brian Sutton Smith asks\, what is the opposite of play? Many of us would answer\, work. Smith says it is depression. Since beginning my exploration into the illusive nature of play over the past four decades\, I have discovered its far-reaching benefits not only to human development from birth throughout the life cycle\, but also to its intrinsic qualities that lend themselves so generously to healing trauma. \nIn this workshop we will explore the essential qualities of play through our own experiential work and underpin our findings with theories on play. Drawing on our own experiences of play\, we will identify the different stages of play found in the developmental play paradigm that is just as relevant to adults as it is to children. \nWe will look at play as the wellspring of all other creative endeavours. \nWe will also explore direct practical exercises that participants may take into their own therapeutic practices. \nEvery aspect of the day will be by invitation to participants\, thereby demonstrating one of the fundamental qualities of free play – that it can only be entered into willingly by choice. I will offer a range of activities and provide the materials for these which will include fabrics\, objects and art materials. \nWe will have opportunity to work as a whole group\, in smaller groups\, in pairs and individually. I would also encourage participants to bring their own notebooks as time will be given for personal reflection as well as for recording the activities themselves. \nI will be drawing on material from my own book Playful Awakening – Releasing the Gift of Play in Your Life and I will bring copies for participants to purchase if they so wish. \nI hope the day will be enlightening\, helpful\, heart-warming and fun for all. \nFacilitator Profile: \nDi is a play therapist\, Buddhist psychotherapist\, clinical supervisor and was a dramatherapist for over thirty years. She has worked in the NHS\, NSPCC\, and has been a freelance practitioner for over three decades. She has taught at Terapia Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy training in London for fifteen years on the subjects of play therapy\, dramatherapist and working with child sexual abuse. She holds MAs in Buddhist Psychotherapy and Creative Writing and has written non-fiction and fiction for many years. Her book\, ‘Playful Awakening – Releasing the Gift of Play in Your Life’ (2017\, JKP) explores her lifelong passion for play in all areas of human endeavour and in the field of healing in particular. Her co-edited book\, ‘One Tree\, Many Branches – The Practice of Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy’ (2024\, Phoenix) illustrates the diversity and skill of Terapia-trained psychotherapists. She has recently published her first novel\, ‘Red Threads’\, a story about forced adoption and the lasting psychological effect this has on the adoptee and the birth mother. \nPrice: CaPPP Members Early Bird £65.00\, CaPPP Members £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nSpaces are limited to 25 and must be booked in advance by Wednesday 14th February \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 refreshments will be available throughout the day and are included in the price. \nLunch: Bring your own lunch or take advantage of one of the many cafes in the area. \nVenue: Quaker Meeting House\, 300 Gloucester Road\, Horfield\, Bristol BS87 8PD

SUMMARY:Psychotherapy and Counselling Union (PCU); Therapists supporting therapists
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP Online event\n\n\nComplaints: Therapists supporting Therapists \nA question and answer session and discussion on complaints and the member support work of the PCU after a brief introduction. With Sasha Kaplin\, PCU Member Support Coordinator\, and Ruth Jones\, Regional Rep for South West and Wales Branch. \nWe are delighted to be hosting this online introduction to the work of the PCU. \nIn complaints procedures bodies like UKCP and BACP are both prosecutors and judges; they are therefore unable to act as defenders and supporters for practitioners being complained about. Also\, in their wish to stay on the right side of government\, trainers and providers\, they often do not speak out clearly in support of therapy and therapists. The union has one clear function\, to stand up for therapists and therapy. Through its activism the PCU has developed relationships with the professional bodies who now recognise them as entitled to support members in complaints processes. Bring your questions and experiences to the session. \nAbout PCU \nThere are many issues where therapists need to act as a group to improve our situation. Several of these are about training\, including discrimination and lack of diversity\, and unpaid work as a built-in aspect of qualifying. Others include the substitution of manualised short-term and ‘wellbeing’ approaches for relationship-based therapies; terms and conditions of employment\, especially in the voluntary sector; complaints procedures; closure of courses and agencies; and the use of therapy to get people off benefits. More generally\, the PCU campaign collectively for recognition of the role of therapy in society. \nffi: https://www.psychotherapyandcounsellingunion.co.uk/ \nBookings: We ask that you only book a place if you are able to commit to attending the event. This is a free CaPPP members only event. Places are limited to 30 and must be booked in advance by 12.00 on Wednesday 31st January. A link to the event will be emailed to you at the latest 24 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:CaPPP Annual Gathering & AGM 2023
DESCRIPTION:Includes CaPPP CPD event with Nicola Jones\n\n\nWorkshop: How an Attachment-Informed Approach Can Make Our Inner Worlds Visible \nDescription: John Bowlby found that our first and most fundamental need is to connect to our parents (primary caregivers) and that this need\, aka the attachment or careseeking system\, exists from “cradle to grave.’ The corollary of this is that attachment theory is as applicable to adults generally and intimate relationships\, as it is to children. Central to this workshop will be exploring insecure attachment styles and how to identify them. I shall draw on research which formulates attachment styles and explore how the development of individuals’ unique internal working models (IWMs) (‘personal attachment style’) are formed and endure causing the problems which are brought to therapy. \nAspects of attachment theory which will be considered and explored include infant development\, the Adult Attachment Interview and narrative style and the impact of insecure attachment (avoidant and preoccupied) on reflective function (mentalisation) and defensive strategies. Also discussed will be the range of emotional responses\, memory systems and the intergenerational transmission of attachment styles and trauma. \nThis workshop will demonstrate how an attachment-informed approach opens windows onto our patients’ inner lives and their IWMs enabling therapists to better guide the therapeutic dialogue. Key research will be mentioned and a bibliography provided with additional material for further reading. \nFacilitator Profile: Nicola Jones is an experienced relationship and individual psychotherapist in private practice\, a supervisor and trainer. She qualified with and worked for Relate Richmond and Kingston and Relate Avon\, studied at The Bowlby Centre for 2 years and has an MA in Gender Studies\, SOAS\, University of London (2008). Nicola has been supervised by those who worked with or were supervised by John Bowlby\, is a trustee and Vice-Chair of the International Attachment Network and member of the Association for Exploring the Dynamics of Adult Attachment (AEDAA). Nicola also lectures and provides training in attachment theory for various training organisations. \nPrice: Free to CaPPP members (Join CaPPP for just £30 a year and take part in this event for free) * We ask that you only book your place if you can commit to attending the event and\, to reduce food waste\, we reserve the right to charge you £15 to cover the catering cost for your place if you do not attend or cancel by 31st October. \nAll places must be booked in advance by 18.00 on Sunday 5th November \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.00 to 9.30 refreshments are available throughout the day \nLunch: Lunch and refreshments are included in your booking \nVenue: Penny Brohn Centre\, Chapel Pill Lane\, Pill\, Bristol BS20 0HH \nAGM: The AGM will be held after lunch between 13.30 to 14.30 with the second part of Nicola’s workshop to follow.

SUMMARY:Introducing 'Internal Family Systems' Psychotherapy with Matthew Harwood
DESCRIPTION:Dialoguing with sub-personalities to heal the childhood wounds\n\n\nThis workshop introduces Internal Family Systems (IFS) – a radical new style of individual psychotherapy which is rapidly growing in popularity around the world. Internationally renowned trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk (author of ‘The Body Keeps the Score’) has described it as ‘the treatment method which all clinicians should know.’ The key word is ‘internal’ – facilitating live dialogues between the client and his/her sub-personalities – i.e. the members of his/her internal psychological family. Gently and respectfully\, an IFS session facilitates the client to uncover the traumatized ‘exiles’ (i.e. the wounded ‘inner child’ parts) which lie underneath their problems & stuckness at the deepest level. The ultimate aim is to release the ‘exiles’ from the crippling burdens which they carry\, with a view to bringing healing and peace throughout the internal system. The workshop will be illustrated by video extracts showing live case material. \nMATTHEW HARWOOD (www.matthewharwood.uk) is a Jungian Analyst & IFS Psychotherapist practicing in the Bath & Bristol area. SUMMARY:Working with Transgender Clients with Lynda Quick
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD event in-person Saturday 19th November 2022 from 10.00 to 16.30\n\n\nGender reassignment involves a fundamental lifestyle change. While many clients seeking gender reassignment have a clear understanding of when they first felt uncomfortable in their birth gender\, and have a clear expectation what life will be like for them after gender reassignment surgery (GRS) the gender reassignment process might uncover challenges they might never have thought of. \nGender reassignment has been described by some as a selfish experience\, the client’s husband/wife/partner; family and friends will be impacted by the clients gender change. How much has the client considered this? There will also be people in their social and working life who will in some way or another be involved in their gender reassignment journey. \nThe clients hope is that gender reassignment will improve the quality of their life\, but for some they may have more to lose than they hope to gain. \nFacilitator Profile: \nLynda Quick has recently retired as a counsellor\, psychotherapist and supervisor. She has 14 years’ experience working with clients with gender dysphoria/gender identity in a NHS Gender Identity Clinic\, and a further 4 years in private practice. She is also an international speaker. \nEvent Description: \nThe workshop will provide an in-depth understanding of why some people seek to change their gender\, and the challenges they face during their gender reassignment process and the impact it has on them and those nearest and dearest to them. Some of the clients I worked with during my 14 years as a counsellor\, psychotherapist\, lead psychotherapist and supervisor at The Laurels Gender Identity Clinic described their need to change gender as a “selfish need”\, when what they were seeking was to achieve gender comfort. \nTransgender \nThe term “transgender” refers to a person whose sex assigned at birth (i.e. the sex assigned at birth\, usually based on external genitalia) does not align their gender identity (i.e.\, one’s psychological sense of their gender). Some people who are transgender will experience “gender dysphoria\,” which refers to psychological distress that results from incongruence between one’s sex assigned at birth and one’s gender identity. Though gender dysphoria often begins in childhood\, some people may not experience it until after puberty or much later. (American Psychiatric Association) \nGender Dysphoria:     \nGender Dysphoria may be experienced in varying degrees\, but in its profound and persistent form\, individuals may need to ‘transition’\, to live in the gender role which is consistent with their gender identity. This degree of Gender Dysphoria may be described as transsexualism. \nEveryone is unique and so too are our experiences. Some people notice the misalignment between the sex they were assigned at birth and their gender identity when they’re a child. For others\, it happens later when they’re a teenager or adult. The medical term for this mismatch is gender dysphoria\, or gender incongruence. \nMany people with gender dysphoria have a strong\, lasting desire to live a life that “matches” or expresses their gender identity. They do this by changing the way they look and behave. \nSome people with gender dysphoria\, but not all\, may want to use hormones and sometimes surgery to express their gender identity. \nGender dysphoria is not a mental illness\, but some people may develop mental health problems because of gender dysphoria (Gender Dysphoria NHS) \nGender Reassignment: \nGender reassignment involves a fundamental lifestyle change. and refers to individuals\, who either: \n\nHave undergone\, intend to undergo or are currently undergoing gender reassignment (medical and surgical treatment to alter the body).\nDo not intend to undergo medical treatment but wish to live permanently in a different gender from their gender at birth.\n\nGoals of psychotherapy for adults with gender concerns \nThe general goal of psychotherapy is to find ways to maximize a person’s overall psychological well-being\, quality of life\, and self-fulfilment. \nPsychotherapy is not intended to alter a person’s gender identity; rather\, psychotherapy can help an individual to explore gender concerns and find ways to alleviate gender dysphoria\, if present (Brockting et al.\, 2006; Brockting & Coleman\, 2007; Fraser\, 2009a; Lev\, 2004). Typically\, the overarching treatment goal is to help transsexual\, transgender\, and gender nonconforming individuals achieve long-term comfort in their gender identity expression\, with realistic chances for success in their relationships\, education\, and work. For additional details\, see Fraser (Fraser\, 2009c). \nTherapy may consist of individual\, couple\, family\, or group psychotherapy\, the latter being particularly important to foster peer support. \nPsychotherapy for transsexual\, transgender\, and gender nonconforming clients\, including counselling and support for changes in gender role. Finding a comfortable gender role is\, first and foremost\, a psychosocial process. Psychotherapy can be invaluable in assisting transsexual\, transgender\, and gender nonconforming individuals with all of the following: \n(i) Clarifying and exploring gender identity and role\, \n(ii) Addressing the impact of stigma and minority stress on one’s mental health and human development\, and \n(iii) Facilitating a coming out process (Brockting & Coleman\, 2007; Devor\, 2004; Lev\, 2004)\, which for some individuals may include changes in gender role expression and the use of feminizing/masculinising medical interventions. (World Professional Standards of Care (WPATH SOC Ver. 7) \nPrice: CaPPP Members £65.00\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 12.00 on Wednesday 16th November. \nRegistration & refreshments: 9.30 to 10.00 lunch and refreshments are included in the price \nVenue: Quaker Meeting House\, 300 Gloucester Road\, Horfield\, Bristol BS87 8PD

SUMMARY:The Race Conversation with Eugene Ellis
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD in-person & online\n\n\nWhat racial differences impose on our minds and bodies as individuals and collectively as a society is demanding and complex. Social change begins with a conversation\, but the challenge is often simply to remain coherent in our thinking\, and often there is a feeling of being under-resourced to stay with the process. In this workshop\, I will explore what happens in our minds and\, also importantly\, in our bodies in the midst of the race conversation and explore how a mindful approach to our physiological responses might support us as practitioners to stay in the conversation and find our voice. \nEvent Programme: \nThe workshop will be interactive and cover: \nThe impact of racial trauma on target and non-targets groups \nRace-based stress models \nHow the construct of race disempowers and dampens compassion and clear thinking \nEmpowering you to navigate oppressive patterns and find your voice \nFacilitator Profile: \nEugene Ellis is a writer and public speaker on issues of race\, difference and intersectionality. He trained as an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and has a special interest in body-orientated therapies and mindfulness. He is also the founder and director of The Black\, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN)\, a network of therapists committed\, passionate and actively engaged in addressing the psychological needs of Black\, African and South Asian people in the UK. Recently\, Eugene became a UKCP Honorary Fellow. His book\, ‘The Race Conversation: An essential guide to creating life-changing dialogue’\, explores the intersection of race and trauma\, the non-verbal communication of race and how we might navigate oppressive patterns. \nPrice: In-person CaPPP Members £65.00 – £70.00\, Non-members £75.00 places are limited and must be booked in advance. \nPrice: Online CaPPP Members £25.00\, Non-members £35.00 \nVenue: Engineer’s House \,The Promenade\, Clifton Down\, Clifton\, Bristol BS8 3NB

SUMMARY:Working with Dreams - a Jungian perspective with Sophia Neville
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD event Saturday 23rd April 2022 at St Michael’s Centre\n\n\nA one-day workshop for therapists offering practical know how. We will look at basic techniques as well as exploring some theoretical ideas about working with dreams. \nAmong other things we will: \n•	Explore the different kinds of dreams and pay attention to how we notice that. \n•	How much it is appropriate\, if ever\, for us to interpret the dream world of another. \n•	How to find ourselves in a fluid attention that doesn’t seek to know but rather allows the dream to retain its’ secrets as well as revealing hints to dreamer and therapist. \n•	How to keep integrity with the dream. Do’s and don’ts. \n•	Ask ourselves what are our beliefs and attitudes towards our own dream world – how do we currently attend to it ourselves? \nIn the afternoon there will be an opportunity for experiential grounding of the material discussed in the morning. We may work together with some dreams and there may be an opportunity for participants to try out some of the methods we have looked at in a fishbowl style. It is often important to put learnings into practice as soon as possible. \nPlease bring at least one dream to share. Old or new dreams welcome. \nFacilitator Profile: \nSophia is a Psychotherapist and Supervisor of many years and has worked with her own and other people’s dreams for thirty-five years as part of a soulful approach to the great Unconscious. For her the dream offers truths from the deep and can help show the way to the conscious mind in times of confusion\, sorrow and joy as well as bring hints from the Collective and the world of prophecy. \nPrice: CaPPP Members £65.00 – £70\, Non-members £75.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 18.00 on Wednesday 20th April. \nVenue: St Michael’s Centre\, The Green\, Stoke Gifford\, Bristol BS34 8PD. SUMMARY:Power in the Therapy Room with Nick Totton
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP Online CPD\n\n\nThe therapeutic dyad is\, among other things\, a space where two people struggle over narratives about what is happening now\, what has happened in the past\, and what may happen in the future. Each person inherently has one vote; so each has a natural incentive to try to make their vote count for more than the other person’s. \nMany tools for winning this struggle are available to both people – domination\, seduction\, intellectual argument\, emotional manipulation\, and so on. However the therapist has some built-in advantages. The therapeutic space is their space. They are familiar with it\, relatively comfortable in it\, and better equipped to define what can and cannot\, should and shouldn’t happen in it. This is not to say that the client has no effective tools with which to fight for power. And it is certainly not to imply that we should try to cleanse therapy of all power struggles! \nI will be arguing that conscious attention to issues of power as they arise in the therapy room\, together with an honest attempt by the therapist to acknowledge their own efforts to control the situation\, can be an enormous valuable aspect of the work. Pretty much everyone – clients and therapists alike – have suffered in early life from a deficit of power\, and from having their perceptions and experience overruled. We need to notice and explore ways in which this can be repeated in the therapeutic relationship\, and ways in which it can be interrupted there. \nAbout Nick Totton \nI have been working as a therapist\, supervisor\, trainer and workshop leader since 1981\, having trained originally as a Reichian bodywork therapist. Since then I have completed an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies; trained (but don’t practice) as a cranio-sacral therapist; attended a number of seminars in Process Oriented Psychology; and developed my own integrative approach to psychotherapy. I offer workshops and seminars on a range of themes\, including embodiment\, ecopsychology\, and the politics of psychotherapy. \nPrice: CaPPP Members £25.00\, Non-members £35.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 18.00 on Thursday 10th February 2022. A link to the event will be emailed to you at the latest 24 hours before the start of the event.

SUMMARY:Resparking Hope after Trauma and Depression with Graham Music
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP Online CPD\n\n\nThis event will illustrate how to understand and work with more shut-down states\, such as those seen after trauma\, neglect and learned helplessness. The talk addresses not only trauma\, but emotional flatness and lack of energy\, the variety of forms this can take\, and how to come back to life after it. New science will be linked with clinical insights needed to shift people from “desparked” lifeless unenergized states – and think about how to reboot and respark emotional and bodily aliveness in our clients\, and possibly in ourselves too!. \nThe talk will use video clips and slides as well as clinical examples and there will be some opportunities for discussion. \nNew thoughts on working with trauma. : The clues are in the body \nGraham Music\, is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Centre and an adult Psychotherapist in private practice. Formerly Associate Clinical Director of the Tavistock Clinic’s Child and Family Department\, he now works clinically at the Portman as a forensic psychotherapist and his clinical experience has for decades been mainly with trauma. He has developed and managed a range of services working with the aftermath of child maltreatment and neglect. He supervises and teaches nationally and internationally and has a particular interest in linking cutting-edge developmental findings with therapeutic practice. SUMMARY:Short-term Counselling working in depth - with Katina Noble & Natasha Maher
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD Event\n\n\n This is a fast-paced active relational model\, mainly informed by the work of David Malan\, Gertrude Mander and Angela Molnos\, among others. \nIn the present economic climate\, with new clients able to afford fewer sessions and with less funding for organisations who offer free or low-cost counselling\, counselling sessions are often limited to 6 or even less sessions. \nThe fear is\, with limited sessions\, how far can one go with the client? Will the relationship perhaps only be a superficial meeting of minds with little chance to really establish a solid working alliance? \nThis workshop aims to introduce an integrative model\, which offers more depth in a short space of time. The model is primarily psychodynamic\, integrating some cognitive and person-centred elements. \nKatina Noble trained at BCPC in Bath as a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor. She co-ran the Student Counselling Service at Weston College for 21 years with Phillipa Henley. Although they did work longer term with some vulnerable students\, the model was generally for short term work\, up to 6 sessions. Alongside this\, Katina worked in private practice with EAP clients. In this work\, the model is again mainly 6 sessions. One EAP trained all its’ affiliates in an integrative model with a strong psychodynamic element as it offers a depth and different dimensions to the work. Katina is passionate about this model and has co-run trainings on it for many years. \nNatasha Maher also trained at BCPC in Bath as a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor. Now co-running the Counselling service at Weston College since 2017 (taking over from Katina and Phillipa)\, she started working with young people in 2012 and has a particular passion in supporting students who struggle with anger and low self-worth. The eight-session short-term psychodynamic model underpins how she works there\, whilst integrating other modalities including shadow work\, dream work and internal family systems therapy. Alongside this\, Natasha has a private practice in Bristol as well as working as a sessional therapist at a local private hospital where she has recently started to facilitate a supportive psychotherapy group. In both of these roles she works with adults on a long and short-term basis\, where the psychodynamic model is again the foundation of the work. \nDate: Saturday 20th November 2021 from 10.00 to 16.00 \nRegistration & refreshments: from 9.30 to 9.55 to allow the event to start promptly. Refreshments and lunch are included in the price \nVenue: St Michael’s Centre\, North Road\, Stoke Gifford\, Bristol\, BS34 8PD Location – St Michael’s \nPrice: CaPPP Members £65.00 – £70.00\, Non-members £75.00 places are limited and must be booked in advance \nRefunds: If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason your payment will be refunded. If the event is cancelled you will be issued a full refund. \nCaPPP Covid Guidance 2021: \nWe are asking everyone who attends an event to read the coronavirus guidance below carefully as it tells you what precautions we and the venue are asking you to take to help reduce the spread of coronavirus and to keep everyone safe. \nWhat we are asking you to do before you attend: \nTo attend any CaPPP event in 2021 we would prefer you to have received both covid-19 vaccinations unless you are unable to do so due to health reasons* or your age group has not yet been offered both vaccinations. SUMMARY:CaPPP Annual Gathering and AGM 2021
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP members only event:\n\n\nThis year as well as introducing an event focusing on therapy against a background of political turmoil and climate change we want to offer members plenty of time to socialise and connect with each other. With that in mind the day will start with registration and 40 minutes for tea\, coffee and refreshments\, there will also be time to stay on after the afternoon workshop for wine\, soft drinks and refreshments when we will also hold our AGM which you are very welcome to attend. \n“Necessary Derangement: Living and Working in a Time When the Familiar is Dying” \nDescription: \nCovid-19 has confronted us with how quickly we can enter uncharted territory and how vulnerable we are despite our technological advances. Climate science predicts that pandemics\, extreme weather events and global challenges\, will only increase in our lifetime. Many of us feel the pull to continue to practice ‘business as usual’\, but it has become increasingly evident that our collective future is radically uncertain. For future generations to survive and even thrive\, our sense of reality demands a radical revisioning\, a “necessary derangement” of how we have understood our world and our living within it. \nWhat is the role of psychotherapists in a time of death of the collective familiar\, a time when we can’t rely on old habits to get us out of trouble? How might we draw upon our personal and professional skills to rise to the enormity that lies ahead and be of service to something larger than our Self? \nDrawing on the existing resources and therapeutic skills we already have\, the workshop will explore what a process of adaptation to an unknown future may ask of us. Steffi will guide participants to ways of attending to their own responses and visions of the future. Together we will examine how we also participate in the collective amnesia and anesthesia of our time. \nAbout Steffi Bednarek \nSteffi has a background in Gestalt psychotherapy\, climate psychology and somatic trauma therapy and has authored a wide range of articles on climate change and psychology. She has been Head of Counselling and Mental Health in higher education\, managed trauma intervention projects and has worked as an international consultant for several Government Ministries\, the Council of Europe and the World Health Organization. She is a member and partner of the Climate Psychology Alliance and leads incubation spaces for mental health professionals on emergent ways of re-ensouling culture. \nCaPPP members only event: This event is free but places must be booked in advance. SUMMARY:Introducing and Integrating Body Senses in Talking Therapy with Mari Winkelman
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP CPD event Saturday 12th June 2021 at Engineer’s House \nMari will explain and facilitate exercises to explore how your body senses inform you and your client unconsciously and consciously. When you gain familiarity in simple ways with your own body’s sensory language\, you can voluntarily choose to engage and resource yourself and your client creatively in times of challenge. \nThe day will be discursive and experiential\, introducing three realms of body senses which can be utilised as resource for therapists and to support clients in deepening and resourcing their experiences in therapy. \nMari draws on her training and practice in experiential anatomy and Integrative Body and Movement Therapy to inform her style of teaching. She will also explore briefly Stephen Porges and Deb Dana’s work around understanding how our body senses detect and respond to threat and to safety in environments and relationships. \nFacilitator Profile:\nMari Winkelman is an integrative embodied therapist and psychotherapeutic counsellor offering embodied therapy to individuals in Stroud\, Glos and online. She has been in practice as a therapist since 2008.\nMari has facilitated group embodiment and movement practices in person since 2012 and online since lockdown.\nHer personal and professional experience and training background is in somatic movement and psychosynthesis counselling. These mutually enriching modalities underpin her approach to relationship with her own body and with her clients and students. With this understanding\, she tailors body awareness and the creative resources of embodied relational practices into her facilitation. www.mariwinkelman.com \n\nVenue and covid safety information: \nEngineer’s House has remained open throughout the pandemic as a training and meeting venue for the NHS and emergency services staff along with vaccine volunteers. SUMMARY:Attachments & Neuroscience Masterclass with Dr Glyn Hudson-Allez
DESCRIPTION:CaPPP online CPD event Saturday 15th May 2021 \nDescription: \nInsecure attachments form neural behavioural pathways that manifest throughout childhood and are replicated in adult loving relationships. In addition\, infant trauma and the vandalization of the sexual template during critical periods in the development of the brain may lead to the later development of paraphilias and inappropriate sexual behaviour. Similar maladaptive strategies can lead to codependent relationships\, domestic violence and sometimes into psychopathology. In a synthesis of neuroscience\, developmental\, and social psychology this masterclass offers a fresh perspective as to the reasons that may precipitate some individuals into adult attachment pathology.\nThe morning will cover the development of an infant’s brain\, pre-programmed emotional circuits\, attachment circuitry\, and the development of the sexual template and the consequence of trauma\, vandalization of the sexual template\nIn the afternoon we will cover adult presentations of attachment styles\, co-dependent relationships\, and will link attachment theory into domestic violence. \nThis workshop is based on the book Infant Losses; Adult Searches (2011) by Glyn Hudson-Allez\nThe workshop will be live via zoom and will provide an interaction between dyadic learning\, group conversations and Q&A sessions. \nThe aims of the Masterclass are:\n• To introduce our understanding of the development of an infant’s brain\, neural pathways and the concept of left-brain right-brain dynamic.\n• To link Bowlby’s concept of attachments into the neural pathways and to discuss how things can go wrong at critical periods of brain development\n• To elaborate on the common behavioural manifestations of adults with insecure attachments in loving relationships and how they can malfunction.\n• To link this understanding into the therapist’s own way of working \nFacilitator: Glyn Hudson-Allez has a BSc (Hons) and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Bristol\, and an MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology from the University of Leicester. She is a Psychosexual Therapist on the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) Supervisory Register\, and works with individuals\, couples and supervisees. She undertook her Cognitive Behavioural Training in California\, but works with an integrative style using attachments and neuropsychology as an underpinning. She has a diploma in Adult Education\, and has lectured in the UK\, Germany and Hong Kong. Glyn has two Fellowships: from The Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists in Primary Care (CPC)\, and The College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT). She is also a Trustee of The Specialist Treatment Organisation for the Prevention of Sexual Offending (StopSo)\nIn her clinical work\, Glyn specialises in working with people with sexual diversity issues\, internet addiction\, and those who have been charged with a sexual offense and became an expert witness in court procedures. \nPrice: CaPPP Members £25.00\, Non-members £35.00 \nPlaces are limited and must be booked in advance by 18.00 on Wednesday 12th May. A link to the event will be emailed to you at the latest 24 hours before the start of the event. \nRegistration on the day will be from 9.30 \nCPD certificates will be sent to participants who complete an evaluation form.
